Overview

The MaxNetAging Research School (MNARS), was launched by the MaxNetAging Network in October 2007. The Research School provides funding for doctoral and postdoctoral students. PhD Students can get funding for up to a maximum of three years, Postdocs for up to a maximum of two years. Each MaxNetAging student is affiliated with one of the participating Max Planck Institutes

At the beginning of the first year, the PhD students and Postdocs spend an initial period of six months at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. During this time, they spend six hours each week in a course program designed to introduce them into various aspects of aging research.

Dominic Akyel

"The MaxNetAging Research School established an interdisciplinary tolerance and an understanding that allowed cutting to the chase, i.e. discussing causes and consequences from different perspectives. Additionally, the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (at which the initial period of the program took place) is an inspiring place to conduct research. The staff is great and very helpful, the whole atmosphere there is open and without any destructive tension."

Dominic Akyel, former MaxNetAging doctoral scholar at the MPI for the Study of Societies

Odette Scharenbourg

"The interdisciplinary MaxNetAging Network enables me to put my research project and its results in a broader context, and it helps me to understand the processes and implications of aging from different perspectives, e.g., demography, biology, psychology, anthropology, and law. Moreover, through the interactions with scientists from all these different fields, the MaxNetAging Network provides me with the opportunity to discuss aging and its implications in the widest sense, which in turn provides me with valuable interdisciplinary input for my project."

Odette Scharenbourg, former MaxNetAging postdoctoral scholar at the MPI for Psycholinguistics

The aim of this, the initial period, is to provide the MNARS fellows with basic instruction, to extend their specialization towards a broader perspective on aging research, to stimulate cross-disciplinary collaboration among the students, and to complement their PhD education. After the end of this period, the students are expected to have substantially developed their PhD dissertation proposals and research projects.

Following the initial period, for the remaining running time of their funding period the PhD students and Postdocs continue their PhD education and research projects at the Max Planck Institutes they are affiliated with, under the supervision of its director. During this period, the students are invited to MaxNetAging workshops and conferences.
